Yeah Baby

Mr. Lewallen's program was fantastic. He detailed a testing environment for us that kept his government clients from having to test alpha stuff on production systems.

We should have been shot.

But we weren't. We were Entertained and Illuminated...!!!!!! And provided with links within vmware.com for future reference.

Stay tuned for future stupendousness from HLUG.

Reports of my demise...

circulated simply because I didn't make it to the Wednesday night meet. I was over halfway there when the rain got so hard that I turned back. I hope nobody got flooded in the parking garage. Therefore, my 3g machine is still waiting for either myself or Carlile to look into its last issues before being useful again. I probably will belay the faster video card in favor of what's onboard since the card didn't fit the case too well.

See everybody tomorrow at 2pm; my Government Contractor's VMware demonstration will be nice and kosher since he cleared it with THEM.

Topical Grab Bag! (updated)

The latest meeting topics:

Oct. 11th - I HAD a presentation based upon the book "Unix Hints And Hacks", which I've bumped forward since Russell can do Graphviz this Saturday!

Oct. 25th - My NASA guy had to reschedule to this day due to his date for the opening weekend of the Renaissance Festival conflicting with the 11th. His topic will be how he uses VMWare.

Nov. 8th - This is the date Russell Adams and I are trying to get James Pool to describe how he uses one of Russell's favorite backup schemes in an impressive production environment.

Nov. 22nd - This will be the date for "Unix Hints And Hacks". It doesn't matter that the book is ten years old; some problems never go away...

And Now, The News

Last Wednesday the 24th, the midweek Linux Workshop shut down early in order to visit en masse the hospital room of longtime member "SCOman" as I first called him (Steve Mussachia). He's doing as good as can be expected; I met his brother for the first time and we then adjourned to the Kirby House of Pies (known by other epithets, of course).

The Saturday the 27th show by Russell Adams regarding Backup Schemes For Linux (my title) drew in a dozen people, which I consider good for what it followed (MASS DISASTER AND DESTRUCTION AT GALVESTON AND ENVIRONS, REMEMBER?) It covered cp, tar, rsync, rsnapshot, AMANDA and other commands and programs. And guess what? The presentation .pdf is right here:

Also check his "presentations" section in general for other things he's done for both HLUG (the Saturday meet) and the Linux SIG (the Wednesday meet).

AND WHERE'S CARLILE BEEN LATELY?? AND WHY WON'T HE FIX MY COMPUTER??

I have only intermittent web access right now...

but here's news passed along from Rich Archibald on Steve's condition, which is news that began developing during the recent weather issue...

---

"Longtime HAL & HLUG member Steve Musacchia is in the ICU at St.
Joseph's Hospital.

He was admitted through the ER Tues. morning a week ago (9/9) & was
put in the ICU Wed. evening (9/10) after having a seizure at the MRI
machine. He was put on a ventilator (contrary to a previous report),
& has been kept kept sedated (unconscious) since then to control the
seizures he continued to have. Sedation was discontinued yesterday
(Wed. 9/17), & he is expected to regain consciousness soon.

His symptoms, which so far have baffled his doctors, started as early
as the Microsoft Server (formerly MCSE) SIG at HAL on Fri. the 5th.
Initially, they thought he might have had a stroke or a series of
strokes; then, bacterial meningitis was suspected; currently, the best
guess is an unidentified infection. Cultures have been taken, but are
not back yet. Although the underlying disease has not been diagnosed;
various symptoms -- blood pressure, the seizures, & fever -- have been
controlled. His condition is bad, but has been stable for the last
week. When he was admitted to the ICU, his survival was in doubt;
now, it looks like there is a chance he will pull through. Almost as
worrisome is the question of possible brain damage from the seizures,
& the possibility of long term disability.

Please keep him in your thoughts & prayers."

It was the end of the world a few days ago...

And I'll be back to Wednesdays as soon as fuel permits. I assume that's true of everybody in this posthurricane situation. The 27th is still the date for the next Saturday presentation as previously announced. Stiff upper lip - Cheerio!

Definite More-than-minor Situation (UPDATED 11pm)

No meeting Saturday - Hal-PC is closed for the... weather...

Looks like Hurricane Ike will drive up the Interstate, taking my exit and pulling into my parking lot. Well, maybe not exactly but I'm heading to my plan B secure location:

PLAN B

So, Saturday the 27th is now the day for the Linux Backup presentation. Everybody keep your head down...

MEDICAL NOTE on Steve: longtime member Steve Mussacchia is in the hospital due to various unwelcome maladies. The doctor at St. Joseph's Hospital describes his condition as "grave" and Steve is currently under sedation in the ICU. Fortunately, he's breathing on his own, but since the apparent seizure Wednesday night there has been little good news. Stay tuned for further details; Steve's a valued member of this organization due to his having done various great presentations for the Saturday HLUG shows and having mentored scores of us.
